Jodie Capella: Many of my parents friends home school their kids. Most of them are a part of Home school communities, so that by the time the kids reach high school, the parents who are math whizzes, or who love science projects take over for the kids own parent. Only one of my parents friends is homeschooling pioneer style. The rest subscribe to the many home school subject matter manuals.I'm in College right now studying to be a teacher, and You don't get certified in your subject area until Masters level. Education classes consist of managing a classroom of 20-30 kids, team teaching, Inclusive classrooms, Legal issues, Behavior management, Organization, Developing a safe, comfortable classroom atmosphere, etc. All kinds of things that are irrelevant to home schooling. In addition, in order to homeschool, you must renew your agreement with your local school district every year, an present the curricula and assessments that you will be using. An approval process follows.N! o Standardized Tests, Degree Requirements, or anything. And about being a dropout: about half of dropouts score in the top of their age range on IQ tests. Why do they dropout? Boredom. They may be better teachers than those who have degrees....Show more
Pei Heatherly: I know that they have web sites and standardized tests and also a curriculum that needs to be followed. I always wondered this myself, this would have to be done by a non working parent and someone who is serious about it.
Vickie Clampett: In NJ home schooled kids are required to take tests to make sure they aren't falling behind.I have a college degree and I don't think I could home school my junior, she's learning things I never did
Alden Sabio: When you finish the rhetoric and fabrication disguising, you are against home schooling because what you propose would make it impossible for the parents to qualify. Also, you are education biased. No, I don't agree with you. There are concerns tha! t you dismiss as invalid by not even mentioning that make home! schooling the choice for some....Show more
Danica Timperman: As a parent considering home-schooling, I find it ridiculous that people without a degree want to teach their children. I think it is outrageous when someone with a very non-related degree wants to teach and it can be harmful for the kids. I do not think you should have all the majors to home-school your children but you should be expert at one thing at least and take a mandatory exam of each subject you want to teach. I mean you can have 20 degrees but that does not make you an expert. I do expect a home-schooling parent to have at least one degree and relevant knowledge which gets tested according to FEDERAL standards. Like you said, some kind of certification should be the minimum requirement for a home-schooling parent. At the moment, I do not think they have strict standards regarding the parents, only the children. From what I've gained, home-schooling rather relies on children who are able to study o! n their own with some parental help. I mean the material is given, not the parents have to make it up. My problem with the system is that reading about something or learning with your kids does not make you a teacher because teaching is not only about the knowledge of the subject matter... not everybody can teach. That's why people should acquire a teaching certificate.Kevin: if someone is too lazy and bored to finish high school, it tells a lot about his or her character. High school drop-outs are bored? Oh come on, we went to college because we loved it? We had to do it, we wanted to be educated, we did not give up while high school drop-outs did. Should I respect them and tell them they would be much better teachers than me just because they did no go through the boring college years? Wow, what a logic. I didn't know I should be ashamed of my degrees......Show more
Charline Granes: Maybe they searched the internet for all the information needed. Maybe they realize ! that the things we learn in school are not all used by us after we're o! ut of school. There are people who may also pay "experts" to come in and teach the students. They can also buy teachers books and from there, they have the answers. I'm pretty sure home schooled children aren't writing on spare pieces of paper.
Helen Zafar: My gut instinct is no, no and many times no, but then when I think it through I have some other considerations.Firstly, I am not a fan of home schooling. While I agree it might be best for some kids, overall I feel those are a tiny minority of those who are home schooled. The thought of someone who did not complete high school being in charge of childrens education is horrible, but as long as it's a well regulated programme and someone is checking up on the progress of the kids, then a parent who has experienced life without education might actually be very well motivated to keep the children on track!I think it's something that should actually be judged on a case by case basis and I think a parent being able to ho! me school should always be granted as a priviledge, not as a right, and a priviledge that might be withdrawn if the child's progress AND development is not sufficient. The child's right to a solid education, including all the social interaction and all the activies, is always more important than the parents right to determine what happens to the child....Show more
Verena Koop: While I disagree with homeschooling (for many reasons), one thing you have to know is that after a certain point, the parent actually does very little teaching. I know this because I know quite a few people who were homeschooled. The students have their curriculum and work at their own pace. It's a lot of reading and testing, and they do quite a bit online too.Kevin, where on earth are you going to school? I've never heard of a school that doesn't teach the subject matter until Masters level....Show more
Marty Tichnell: You raise some fantastic points about the dilemmas in home schooling.! The essential question that you might consider is who has ultimate re! sponsibility and authority over a child, the parent or the state. If you hold with the state then by all means have parents pass a state test before approving them to keep their child at home.My last thought is that is it fair to assume that a person who drops out of school is necessarily stupid?. Also I don't think a parent is responsible for teaching every topic in a child's education; they are responsible for directing it. With the internet, tutors, and community colleges, many can get fine and maybe better educations than they can by staying in schools which frankly are garbage pits in many areas. With good parent supervision and direction, home schooling is appropriate no matter the parent's lack of success in a traditional school....Show more
Toby Caswell: I would guess its because nuns don't get paid. That lowers the average considerably. What makes private schools score better is parent participation, and the ability to choose their students, and they don'! t choose kids who need mainstreaming, or kids with disciplinary problems. You skim the cream and you are left with skim milk. If we went back to being allowed to teach kids who are educable and not forced to deal with kids who can't learn or who disrupt the class, the teachers would look better, whether they were or not. If the private schools had to run the same way they make the public schools run, they wouldn't be any better, it's not the teachers, its the students, and their parents. If it were teachers, no student in their class would do well. But that's not what happens. You worry too much about tenure, most teachers don't last five years, and unions don't make you keep bad teachers, if you can't tell a teacher is bad after five years whose fault is that? And unions and teachers don't set the programs for the schools, the school boards do....Show more
Reginald Maxi: i feel that home school is ok but there is soooooo many more reasons why its badsocially a child ! needs to interact with others and so being in a school with so many oth! er childern they can interact and grow in that way and it will help them when they are older otherwise they will be a loner and have no friends!
