Mee Blumenfeld: What have you done since the Clinton era(11 years since the man left office, 19 since he took it) to get health care coverage? Have you looked for a job that offers you insurance? Have you started a medical savings plan? The ugly fact is that the government can never provide adequate health care to everyone. There are simply too many people to cover, especially if simple things like doctor's and dentists' visits are included in coverage. And simple human nature is that when something is free, people will use it more than if they have to pay. So more people will use the system, even if they don't need it, when they have no financial stake in keeping costs down. The system needs reforming, but whatever the solution is, it's not going to be easy. Our capitalist system develops cutting edge treatments, even cures, but it costs. Many elderly people use a disproportionate amoount of healthcare( the last figures I saw indicate about 10% of the people gener! ate roughly half the cost to the health care system). So who will make the decisions on who does, and does not, get how much care? Who is paying for it and how? We're already at record levels of debt. How long can we borrow money from other countries before they call in their markers? And yes, I'd love to see those lawmakers who assure they get top quality healthcare on our dime try having to manage their lives without the safety net they enjoy. But however reforms take place, it won't be an easy job, and it will be a dangerous one, with no guarantee that reforms will improve matters in the long run....Show more
