How to keep a Betta Fish Entertained?

Armanda Hertel: Yah don't put a mirror in. That's bad. my friends like killed itself cuz of the mirror he kept running into it trying to kill his reflection. Beta fish, and fish in general have a 3 second memory which is why they can swim around and around in a little tiny bubble and not get bored. They keep turning around and going "whoa!!! new things over there"

Nelly Kikuchi: Forget about "spoiling" or "entertaining" your fish.Start by giving him the bare minimum he needs to survive. Here is what you need to know for your Betta to live a long and happy life:1. A 5-gallon cycled ( http://www.firsttankguide.net/cycle.php and http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aquarium… ) tank is minimal for Betta health. (If you want to spoil him, make that a 10+ gallon.) Smaller tanks and bowls do not maintain a consistent temperature, and it's nearly impossible to keep healthy water conditions. 2. A filter is necessary in any tank in order to keep the water aerated and free of to! xins. For Bettas it is best to set the filter flow to low, as they are not very strong swimmers. Another good option is a sponge filter.3. A heater is essential. Bettas need warm steady temperatures of about 80F, to thrive. Constant fluctuation leads to stress, which inevitably leads to disease and often death. You can find an inexpensive heater for a small tank at any fish store.4. In a 5-gallon or larger tank, weekly 25% water changes, using a gravel siphon are necessary. Water conditioner must be added to the new water before it is put in the tank to remove toxic chlorine, chloramine, metals, etc. Never change all of your Bettas water, as this shock your Betta, and ultimately weaken him.5. Bettas enjoy a well planted aquarium, (use live or silk plants, plastic can tear their fins,) with a cave or two for exploring and resting. 6. Feed your Betta a good staple pellet or flake diet, substituting frozen foods such as brine shrimp and blood worms several times per week. Rese! rve one day per week for fasting. Bettas have been known to li! ve for 10 years. I have personally known them live to for 6. This will not happen in a bowl. Tyrone Disanti: Another one of those. Huh? no fish can survive in a Fish bowl. just thought i would mention that. 2.5 Is needed for them to thrive at a minimum. you should get your betta a 5 gallon filtered Tank. Or even larger with a heater. betta fish are Tropical. And Need Warm water temperatures. you also Know that Betta's need oxygen just like we do. so if you fill the tank up to the top. your Fish will suffocate. Test your water parameters. i bet they are sky high with him in a fish bowl. Upgrade him to a nice bigger tank. they are probably $5-10 at your local pet store or even walmart. betta fish also get bored With the same diet. So switch it up a bit instead of flakes All day *toss *toss* Toss* Would you like to live in a dirty unheated unfiltered bowl And eat flakes 24/7? I wouldnt t! hink So. And now that winter is here. hes going to need a Heater. And you cant put one in a fish bowl. Bettas are tropical fish and thrive in a constant temperature of 78 to 80 Farenheit. No more no less. dont let him suffer and die from ammonia poisoning. Act now. Good luck. Cheers. you said you dont want to Spend yours in a boring fish bowlNEITHER DOES HE! Upgrade his tank to a 5-10 gallon and see just how active he gets.also. harry ball's information is very misleading. Fish do care. Take a porcupine puffer fish for example. they throw tantrums and spit water at you if you dont feed them on time. they smile. Etc. Good luck once again and dont listen to any of these idiots Not mentioning that They cant live in a fish bowl. please do your proper research on a fish Before buying it And also the next Information is very misleading. fish do not have a 3 second memory span. Fish can remember things there whole lives. once again. porcupine puffer fish come i! nto example. they greet you at the tank. Remember you. Etc. fish can ha! ve a memory span of there whole lives. Im sick of people thinking just because fish are small they have Little to no brains....Show more

Kizzy Hett: I put a small bit of live sea-weed in with mine. I also give it an occasional bit of live brine shrimp. They won't survive long if he doesn't eat them all, but they are his favorite food. Don't put any of the brine water in his bowl, just the brine shrimp.

Hugo Pittari: Ocassionally put a mirror by his bowl, and he should"flare" at it. Doing this stimulates him( he thinks it's another fish). You can also put his bowl next to another tank( if you have one...I have guppies) he can react with out hurting himself or other fish. You could also "track" a pen outside the bowl( not on it) because they think it's another fish too.

Derrick Kloke: whatever you add, make sure its safe, for example if you add a castle make sure he can't get stuck up in it, because then you'll just be torturing the little guy, but maybe fin! d a castle or like a pirate ship to put in there :)

May Stands: A soft cozy sofa and maybe an entertaining bar would be good upgrades for the fish bowl. Also, hire a juggler or joker to personally entertain your fish, kinda like they did in the times of Kings and Queens.

Barrett Zheng: Bowls are highly unsuitable and stressful for the fish. A betta needs a minimum of a 5+ gallon heated and filtered aquarium. Please do the right thing.Merry Fishmas-Fishman...Show more

Tom Romer: Put in a Piranha with it.Trust me it will not get bored.

Reginald Maxi: Hi - I believe Aquella and Hunter did a fabulous job answering this question, so I won't repeat what they said. However I just wanted to say what a bad/terrible idea i think it is to put a mirror in front of a male beta fish!!! These fish are highly territorial and will not accept the presence of any other male beta: if 2 of them end on the same territory, they will fight till one dies. The reason another p! erson said that the mirror "stimulates him" is because the fish believe! s that there is another male in his territory and wants to protect it. Just imagine that for him that mirror is equal to a life treat; and then wonder yourself if that's the "entertainment" you want to offer to him.Otherwise, I believe it's salutary that you are concerned with the well being of your fish. Yes, they do have personalities and just because they can't cuddle at your feet it doesn't mean that they are less of a good pet. Good luck and have fun! :-)...Show more

Neely Youngblut: All I know is that when he is happy/content he'll make a bubble nest, you should add a hiding place, and some floating plants for his bubble nest to anchor too, and the mirror thing should only be done once a week or maybe even once every two weeks. Bettas are carnivores, they sell blood worms as a treat for bettas mine LOVEs them, I also get him little ants i find too. try to get real plants or soft fake plants betts like to hide in the plants. I have a squishy fake plant i thi! nk its silicon or something. Good luck...Show more

Lady Laflin: It's a fish man. That fish doesn't give a crap about any of that stuff. They don't think. They are on autopilot. They eat, shyte and avoid predators. That's all they are capable of doing.

Travis Sherrock: Just a note to you people saying that all fish do is hide from predators and eat, I am around fish 24/7 and can attest to their personalities. This is a very valid question. I have a 4 foot Great Barracuda that enjoys watching TV (no, I am not kidding, he is in my living room and when the TV is on he swims to that side of the tank and watches with us, he has even reacted to scary movies where the bad guy jumps out and the Barracuda jumps and swims all around and goes back to watching. He is in a 700 gallon tank, so he has plenty of other places he can go, and he does, except when the TV is on he likes to watch)The rock and plants are a great addition. If you can, try live plants, or upgra! de him to a larger tank. That will do wonders....Show more

Malco! m Bourek: At pet stores they have a special tank for Betta fish that has 2 sides. There is a glass plate separating the tank and you can put your Betta as well as another Betta they will entertain each other.
